On the return drive from a weekend in Gijón, about three hours away from my home in Bilbao, my roommate and i stopped at a gas station where this song was playing. here in Spain, they must get some sort of discount overseas rate on licensing for songs that nobody has listened to in the United States for 30 years.

in Memorium: Etta James

While her death incited me to rediscover some songs i hadn't heard in a while, but this is one of my all time busted-love favorites. i discovered it in February of 2009 while living in Washington DC for a month for work. i was with a coworker getting a drink and warming up after the shift, and she put this song on the jukebox and sang it, and i instantly knew it would be part of my story. i've listened to it a lot and shared it with a some really beautiful people since then, which has only intensified, rather than diminished, its heart wrenching soulfulness.
